Health & Safety Policy — Parsons Green Skip Hire

Parsons Green Skip Hire is committed to protecting the health and safety of employees, contractors, customers and the public involved in our skip hire and rubbish removal operations. This policy sets out the overarching approach to risk management for our rubbish company activities, including skip hire service arrangements, waste collection and site operations, and is applicable to all personnel engaged in waste transport and skip management.

Scope and Objectives

The objectives of this policy are to prevent injury and ill health, to comply with statutory duties, and to promote continuous improvement in safety performance across our waste collection and skip hire service area. We will identify hazards associated with vehicle movements, manual handling, hazardous waste segregation and on-site loading, and implement proportionate controls. All staff must work to reduce risk, report unsafe conditions, and support a positive safety culture.

Team members conducting a site risk assessment Roles and Responsibilities The company director retains overall responsibility for health and safety, while operational managers are accountable for day-to-day implementation. Supervisors must ensure teams follow safe systems of work and use required PPE. Employees are responsible for cooperating with procedures, attending training and using safety equipment correctly. Contractors and drivers engaged by the rubbish company must demonstrate competence and follow our site rules.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems

Risk assessments will be undertaken for all routine and non-routine tasks, including skip placement, loading and haulage. Control measures will be proportionate to the hazards identified and may include traffic management plans, designated loading zones, mechanical lifting aids and prohibition of lone working where risks dictate. Documented safe systems of work will be available for high-risk activities such as hazardous waste handling and working near live roads.

Training and competence are essential for safe rubbish removal and skip hire operations. We will provide induction training, job-specific instruction, and refresher sessions for staff and drivers. Records of competence, licences and certificates will be maintained. Supervisors will carry out routine observations and coaching to ensure consistent application of safety practices across our waste management operations.

Operational controls include vehicle safety checks, securing of loads before transit, correct use of lifting equipment and clear segregation of recyclables and hazardous materials. The company will ensure that all plant and equipment used in the skip hire service is maintained in a safe condition and inspected at appropriate intervals.

Operators wearing PPE during skip loading Personal Protective Equipment and Health Appropriate PPE such as high-visibility clothing, gloves, steel-toe footwear and eye protection will be provided where required. Use of PPE must be in accordance with risk assessments and staff should report damaged or defective equipment immediately. Occupational health considerations, including control of manual handling, noise and vibration, will be addressed through work design and monitoring.

Specific arrangements for hazardous waste or potentially dangerous loads will include identification, secure containment, clear labelling and compliant transportation. Where specialist disposal is required, only authorised carriers and facilities will be used. The rubbish company will maintain up-to-date records and follow permitted waste transfer procedures.

Emergency spill response equipment Incident Reporting and Emergency Response All incidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported without delay. We operate a clear reporting process and will investigate incidents to identify root causes and prevent recurrence. Emergency arrangements, including spill response and first aid provision, will be documented, rehearsed and communicated to staff. Strong emphasis is placed on learning from incidents and implementing corrective actions promptly.

Supervisor leading a safety briefing Monitoring, Audit and Continuous Improvement Regular monitoring, workplace inspections and audits will be carried out to confirm compliance with this policy and with relevant legal requirements. Performance indicators for the skip hire and rubbish removal service area will be reviewed periodically and shared with managers to foster continuous safety improvement. Where deficiencies are identified, timely remedial action plans will be implemented.

Engagement and consultation with employees form an integral part of our safety management. Staff will be encouraged to raise concerns, suggest improvements and participate in safety briefings. Health and safety communication will be maintained through toolbox talks, notices and documented procedures to ensure everyone understands their role.

Policy Review This policy will be reviewed at least annually or following significant change, incident or legislative update. The review process will evaluate effectiveness and ensure that our skip hire operator controls remain suitable for the scale and nature of operations. The company is committed to achieving high standards in waste collection, rubbish removal and skip hire safety, embedding risk reduction in day-to-day activities.
